UBWGI Puu- ja viherrakentaminen kaupunkiympäristössä ja puutuotealan tuote- ja palvelupotentiaali

UBWGI-projektin tavoitteena on tuottaa tietoa julkisille päätöksentekjöille ja elinkeinoelämälle siitä, miten materiaalivalinnoilla, regulaatiopolitiikalla ja infrastruktuurin suunnittelulla voidaan edistää kaupunkien puu- ja viherrakentamista siten, että turvallisuus, terveellisyys, energiatehokkuus, vähähiilisyys/ hiilensidonta ja elinkaarivaikutukset ovat mahdollisimman hyvin tasapainossa ja miten urbaani puurakentaminen ja siihen liittyvä viher- ja ulkorakentaminen ja näihin liittyvä liiketoiminta voidaan mahdollisesti yhdistää toisiaan tukevalla tavalla. Lisäksi tutkitaan puutuoteteollisuuden uusia mahdollisuuksia edistää puurakentamista tuotteiden ja palveluiden toimittajana ja muodostaa uusia arvoverkkoja rakentamisen muiden toimijoiden kanssa ja hyötyä puurakentamisesta sekä puutuoteteollisuuden sivuvirtojen uusia ja vaihtoehtoisia käyttökohteita ja soveltuvuutta eri käyttöalueille.

Projekti koostaa, analysoi, julkaisee ja levittää nykyistä tietoa kaupunkien puurakentamiseen liittyvistä turvallisuus-, terveellisyys- ja kestävyyskysymyksistä (mm. paloturvallisuus, sisäilman laatu, homeriskit, akustiikka, energiatehokkuus, psykofyysiset vaikutukset), erityisesti suhteessa viherrakentamisen ratkaisuihin, tukee Luken TKI-yhteistyötä puurakentamisen muiden toimijatahojen kanssa tavoitteena suuret yhteistutkimusprojektit ja valmistelee Luken TKI-agendaa puurakentamisen edistämiseksi. Samoin kootaan tietoa viherrakentamisen integroimisesta puurakentamiseen ja niiden keskinäisistä hyötyvaikutuksista ja epävarmuustekijöistä. Lisäksi tehdään esitutkimuksia ja valmistellaan yhteistutkimuksia puulevyteollisuuden materiaalien ja tuotteiden kehittämisestä puurakentamisen tarpeisiin ja toimialan laajentamisen mahdollisuuksista sekä puutuoteteollisuuden sivuvirtojen käytön kehittämiseksi ja lisäämiseksi. Luke rakentaa myös alan pohjoismaista yhteistyötä yhdessä kotimaisten toimialajärjestöjen kanssa ja eurooppalaista yhteistyötä tunnustettujen TKI-organisaatioiden kanssa.

English summary:

The project aims to

1. Produce information and incentives for public decision makers (esp. YM and TEM ministries, cities and municipalities), builders and building companies on how to promote urban wood construction with regulation policy, material choices as well as development and integration of value networks, including an inter-nordic benchmarking of the codes and concepts.

2. Produce guidelines of urban green infrastructure in residential and public areas of building with wood to help planning of socially and ecologically functional urban environments that apply trees and other nature-based solutions and wood-based environmental constructions.

3. Evaluate the potential and restrictions and present alternatives and incentives to integrate building with wood and green infrastructure in an urban area for mutual benefits of business enterprises, public stakeholders and consumers involved (state-of-art).

4. Develop further the framework for a research and development agenda which presents LUKE’s idea about integration of urban building with wood and green infrastructure, and contribution of wood products and service and partnerships of wood product industries, where

a) safety and health issues (fire safety, indoor air quality, control of air moisture content and temperature, prevention of mold (mildew) hazards, physiological and mental health), energy efficiency, acoustic issues, life cycle effects, long-term durability and cascading and recycling in relation to material choices,

b) outdoor air quality, energy efficiency and acoustic issues and their improvements through green vegetation, and other positive effects

c) supply chains and value networks with their commercial partnerships, sources and supplies of raw materials and products are in optimal balance and support each other as future solutions of construction and environment. Research partners and stakeholders will be integrated to the planning of agenda.

5. Identify, study and promote new opportunities to utilize side streams of wood products manufacturing for the industries (saw and plywood mills, CLT, other joinery and house-manufacturing industries) and their customers in bio-refinery, wood panel and composite industries as well as recycled wood products and demolition wastes - in order to improve the overall profitability of the business, match to the EU directives for waste management and develop resource efficiency and closed loops of materials in the value chains.

6. Produce information on the suitability of domestic raw material and product basis for building with wood, study the potential of new sources (birch and other hardwoods, multi-species panels and CLT, physical/chemical modification) in collaboration with regional r&d partners and industries, and present a European benchmark.

Through this project, LUKE aims to a closer co-operation with the research and development institutions of building sector, wood and building industries, national decision-makers and city authorities in Finland.
